Oxygen Deprivation

Oxygen deprivation injurys can occur in and outside of the medical field.  Provided below is a list of the most common causes for oxygen deprivation and a breif exlination of a situation where these grevious injuries can occur.

  • Drowning-  the result of an uncovered swimming pool.
  • Asphyxiation caused by smoke inhalation- the result of a fire.
  • Very low blood pressure- caused by loss of blood or improper use of anaesthesia.
  • Strangling- can occur as a birth injury with the umbilical cord.
  • Injuries during birth- no air way provided
  • Cardiac arrest (when the heart stops pumping)- heart attacks
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning- CO can build up in homes and is deadly
  • High altitudes
  • Choking- inhalation of foreign product.
  • Compression of the trachea- trauma or blunt physical force
  • Complications of general anasthesia- low blood pressure, allergic reaction

Brain cells are extremely sensitive to oxygen deprivation. Some brain cells actually start dying just under five minutes after their oxygen supply is cut. As a result, oxygen deprivation can kill or cause severe brain damage rapidly.
